Not all programmable thermostats are designed to control temperature with such precise accuracy. If you if you are used to your old, less precise thermostat, this means you may find that the room temperature reads differently with Sensi thermostat. We’ve taken this difference into consideration so a Temperature Offset feature is included in the Sensi mobile app. This feature allows you to adjust the display temperature +/- 5-degrees to make up for the difference. Also, because of Sensi’s pinpoint accuracy, your equipment may turn on and off at different rates than it did with your older thermostat. If this happens, you can adjust your cycle rate settings to suit your personal preferences using the Cycle Rate feature on the Sensi app.

Learn how the right thermostat can provide comfort in vacation homes

Summer is a time when many families will begin a mass exodus to their vacation homes and spots around the country for a long weekend of well-deserved rest and relaxation. But, before you can rest there is a lot of stress.

Sending off harried work emails and trying to remember if you clicked “out-of-office” on your settings.

Frantically packing an entire family and wondering if you packed enough.

Carting the pets off to the boarder.

Gassing up the car.

And of course, balancing the checkbook to make sure there is enough money to pay for it all.

And while probably the last thing on your mind is whether you should replace your outdated thermostat in your vacation home, perhaps it should be your first. Adding a Wi-Fi thermostat to your home away from home can go a long way in alleviating your pre-vacation stress, providing comfort during your stay, and alleviating post-vacation worries.

Perks of using a Wi-Fi thermostat in your vacation home

1. Planning and packing assistance

No, it won’t do the packing for you. But many Wi-Fi thermostats have local weather information in the mobile app. With this, you can easily see the current temperature of the place where you are traveling. Viewing the high and low temps will give you an idea of the range during the day so you can make sure you are packing appropriately.

2. Comfort upon arrival

There is nothing worse than walking into a summer vacation home that has been unoccupied for months. The stagnant, stale air would be off-putting to anyone and could easily dampen spirits. Using a Wi-Fi thermostat, you can easily choose when to turn your home cooling or heating system to make sure it is the perfect temperature when your family arrives.

3. Savings, savings, savings

Everyone wants to save money. Using a Wi-Fi thermostat, you can easily adjust the temperature settings to save money when your vacation home isn’t in use. It will also lower the wear and tear of your heating and cooling equipment and save on costly maintenance fees.

4. Peace of mind

A Wi-Fi thermostat can give you the sense of security that comes from knowing that you can change your settings from anywhere with the convenience of a mobile app. No more worrying if you forgot to lower or raise the temperature after you shut down the house and are already on your way home. You will also be able to change the settings from across the country to take advantage of breaks in the weather or to ensure your home is warm enough to prevent things like pipe damage during cold winter months.

The Sensi thermostat difference

Choosing a Sensi thermostat for your vacation home is a smart choice. First, if you already have a Sensi thermostat in your regular house, the mobile app offers multiple thermostat control from the same interface so you don’t have to download another app. Second, a vacation home would have a varied schedule with no easily recognizable traffic patterns. Sensi thermostat is not going to learn or guess what it thinks your temperature should be. Rather, it smartly puts you in complete control of your settings. Third, if you choose to pause your Wi-Fi service in your vacation home when you aren’t there, Sensi will continue to function as a traditional thermostat. And lastly, Sensi will send you email alerts if it senses a problem at your property, such as high or low home temperatures or a loss of heating or cooling. This way, you can arrange for a service call before a problem gets too big.

So as you’re deciding what to pack for your holiday, add a Sensi™ Wi-Fi Programmable Thermostat to the list and enjoy not only your vacation but a lifetime of comfort.

Energy Efficient Thermostat Settings

Sensi thermostat settings and features can save energy and protect HVAC equipment

One of the easiest ways to conserve energy while also retaining and maximizing home comfort levels is efficiency is to use your smart Wi-Fi thermostat settings and schedules. The Sensi™ Wi-Fi Programmable Thermostat lets you create custom temperature schedules for each day of the week (up to seven independent schedules); making it easy to create one or multiple schedules to match your family’s routine. Using the Sensi mobile app, select the days you want to follow a specific schedule, and choose the time and temperature set points for each.

You can also run heat-only or cool-only schedules.

In addition to the easy scheduling options, the Sensi mobile app also has several features and advanced thermostat settings * that allow your custom schedules to maximize your home comfort, become more energy efficient, and protect HVAC equipment. Here are some tips and tricks on how to get the most from your smart thermostat…

wi-fi thermostat schedule

1. Use the Early Start feature wi-fi thermostat settings

Many people raise their thermostat temperature at night during the summer to lower energy use and to take advantage of cool, summer breezes. But no one likes to wake up to stifling heat once the sun starts to warm up the house in the morning. The Early Start feature tells your Sensi thermostat to start the cooling (or heating) system early to ensure that your home is at the exact temperature you want at the time you want it according to your schedule

For example: Your thermostat schedule is set for 75°F during the evening hours but lowers to 70°F at 8:00 a.m. Since most cooling systems take longer to lower the building temperature, a single stage cooling will take 15 minutes for each degree. In this situation, using the Early Start feature, your Sensi will activate your cooling system at approximately 6:30 a.m. to achieve the desired 70°F by 8:00 a.m

Your home cooling system is crucial to your family’s comfort so Sensi thermostat has advanced settings to protect your equipment. The A/C Protection feature will delay cooling for a few minutes when the cooling system is turned off, and then quickly back on, in order to prevent potential damage to your equipment. This feature is available when you have an air conditioning unit, or a heat pump connected to your Sensi thermostat.

2. Customize your thermostat settings with Temperature Offsetwi-fi thermostat settings

Sometimes your thermostat may display a slightly different temperature than you are used to. Other manufacturers’ thermostats have a temperature differential of +/- 3-degree or even +/-5-degree. This can make for a dramatic temperature swing that gives homeowners little to no control in energy savings or comfort levels. But the Sensi thermostat has a +/- 1-degree temperature differential built in for maximum comfort. The Temperature Offset allows you to change the temperature display +/- five degrees to match your previous thermostat or thermometer. Sensi will then use the new number as the actual temperature of the room.

3. Control your HVAC equipment cycle rate

If you feel that your system is turning on and off too quickly, or causing wide temperature swings by turning on and off too slowly, simply use the Sensi mobile app to adjust the Cycle Rate. Cycle Rate regulates how fast your heating and cooling system attempts to deliver the set point temperature. A fast cycle rate will provide tighter temperature control and shorter on/off cycles. A slower cycle rate will provide a slightly wider temperature variation with longer on/off cycles.

For most homes with ducted heating and cooling systems, the default medium setting is optimal. Homes with hot water boilers or steam heating systems should consider using the slow cycle rate for optimal comfort.

4. Boost your home comfort

The Boost feature is available on systems with more than one stage of heating or cooling. Boost “On” provides maximum comfort quickly and will activate all available heating or cooling stages when the temperature is manually changed by three or more degrees. Boost “Off” provides maximum efficiency and the Sensi thermostat will bring on additional stages based on a calculation of current system performance.

The Sensi mobile app is designed to add comfort and convenience to your life. Whether you are in bed, at work or on vacation, the app allows you to monitor and control your thermostat 24 hours a day. Make your Sensi thermostat advanced settings work for you – save energy– and have peace of mind.

*Setting availability is determined by the type of heating or cooling system you have in your home.

Wi-Fi Thermostats, Compatibility, and the C-Wire

c-wire

Understand what a c-wire is and how it works with Wi-Fi thermostats

If you are a homeowner who is considering adding a new Wi-Fi thermostat, you might find yourself overwhelmed by the number of different options. Chances are that your research has left you with more questions than answers. How do you know what kind of system you have? How do you know if a thermostat is compatible with your system? Will you be able to install it yourself? One of the most important factors in all of these questions is whether or not your system has or will require the common, or c-wire. If you aren’t an engineer, or familiar with HVAC systems and how they work, wiring can be intimidating. So, before you select a Wi-Fi thermostat for your home, take the confusion out of c-wire and better understand what it is and how it works with your thermostat.

c-wire

Thermostat Wires

What is a C-Wire?

A common, or c-wire, is a low-voltage wire that runs from the heating and cooling equipment to your thermostat, providing constant 24-volt power. Typically, this wire is connected to the “C” terminal on the system, and the “C” terminal on the thermostat base. However, some manufacturers use different labels like “B” and “X”, so it is important to consult both your system and your current thermostat manual to determine whether or not you have a c-wire.

How a C-Wire Works with Wi-Fi Thermostats?

Many older thermostats did not require a c-wire because they functioned as simple on/off devices, and lacked many of the advanced features found on modern thermostats. With the emergence of Wi-Fi thermostats, many brands now require a c-wire in order to control features like backlit displays, touch screens, and wireless communication. Without a c-wire, the thermostat might not be able to maintain a stable connection to Wi-Fi, and homeowners could lose the remote access that these thermostats are designed to provide. It is important to note that this depends largely on system compatibility and can vary from one brand to the next.

The Sensi Difference

The Sensi Wi-Fi Programmable Thermostat is compatible with the majority of combined heating and cooling systems and doesn’t require a c-wire, which makes replacing your old thermostat an easy, DIY process. Instead, Sensi includes two (2) AA batteries that provide backup power to the thermostat, and last for at least several months and in most cases up to a year. If you already have a c-wire connection, even though it is not required, we recommend connecting it to Sensi to help improve Wi-Fi connectivity and battery life.

Although Sensi was designed to work without a c-wire in most cases, there are a few system exceptions, like heat-only and cool-only units, that will require a c-wire connection in order to power the thermostat, Click here for system types

If you determine that a c-wire is required for your installation, it is important to consult a professional contractor to discuss your options.

Investing in a new Wi-Fi thermostat is an investment in your home comfort. So take the time to understand how your particular system works and ensure that you purchase the best thermostat, and install with confidence.
